Case Study: Stannah – taking the legwork out of shopping in Sainsbury’s

Once again, a pair of Stannah moving walkways has taken the legwork out of shopping in the brand new branch of Sainsbury’s in Leigh, Lancashire.

Built on the site of its smaller predecessor, this bigger, better store delivers a streamlined retail experience that caters for shoppers of all mobility levels.

The moving walkways operate between the ground-floor entrance area and food hall and first-floor clothing, café, pharmacy and click and collect. They deliver secure, efficient movement for shoppers and their trolleys over a vertical rise of 4250mm at a 10o angle, and at rated speed of 0.5ms. For those unable to use the walkways, store access is further complemented by a passenger lift.

Supported by clear, 10mm-thick tempered safety glass panel balustrades, the extra slim handrails feature strategically-sited, tactile white markers to assist the visually impaired.

Secure travel is furthered assured by an MP3 voice announcement system that automatically broadcasts guidance and safety messages.

The full VVVF (variable voltage, variable frequency drive) system enables slow speed control when low traffic usage is required – in full compliance with BREEAM ENE9, the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

A store manager in Leigh comments:

“Our new store provides a positive shopping experience with the Stannah moving walkways delivering vital access over two floors for customers and their trolleys. So many more people can be catered for this way; they really make a difference to the smooth-running of the store.”
Store Manager, Leigh Sainsburys

Working in partnership with lift consultants, Lerch Bates, the Stannah Escalator and Moving Walkway team completed the project in just four weeks.

This is the latest installation on behalf of Sainsburys, with Stannah lift products already operating in numerous branches throughout the UK. All access products help Sainsbury’s comply with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and, of course, make shopping so much easier for all their customers.
